Aussie Man Builds Big-Block Batman Tumbler With Nitrous, Videotapes Entire Build Process

Beginning in 2006, Aussie superhero Grant Hodgson started off with a dream, a dream of being the Batman, and he's been building a faithful replica of the Tumbler ever since. This time it comes with a build blog. Grant's version looks to be even closer to the real deal than the one built by Bob Dullam, featuring a 560 HP GM 454 CID V8, Turbo 400 automatic transmission, Argo V drive and a reinforced 35-spline Detroit Locker nine-inch rear end. The best part is that we get to watch it in action and watch the fabrication. Oh, did we mention it's got nitrous too? Yeah. Build image and more below the jump. More »

Honda Insight Vs. Toyota Prius: Separated At Birth?

It's hard not to think the new Honda Insight hybrid and the Toyota Prius look like kissing cousins. But, while both are five-door hatches sharing similar profiles, cut lines and green-tinged halos... they've got vastly different designs. Below the jump, we've detailed seven of the literally tens of differences between the two happy hybrids. And yes, we're even including the big "H" on the front of the 2010 Honda Insight. More »

How To Escape A Hurricane By Car

Evacuating from a hurricane involves more than just getting into your car and driving away from the coast. Of the estimated 120 deaths associated with Hurricane Rita, 107 of them were related to the mass vehicular evacuation rather than the storm itself. With hurricane watches being issued for the Mid-Atlantic and a major hurricane approaching the Bahamas, we thought it was a good time to review the proper steps an individual should take when evacuating from a storm in a motor vehicle. New Honda Insight Hybrid Revealed, Expected $18,500 Price Tag To Make It World's Cheapest

Honda pulled a fast one on us and gave its new Prius-killer a crazy dusted-off name — the 2010 Honda Insight. While certainly not creative, the intent behind this vehicle is. At an expected price tag of $18,500, the new Honda Insight is expected to compete at a much lower price point than any other hybrid on the market. Although it's only a "concept" version, we're told we should expect the final version to show off more than 90% of the same looks as the one pictured here. We'll find out for sure when we see it officially unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October, with the production-intent tweaks debuting at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Our first take is the Insight looks surprisingly like our rendered speculation, but actually jazzes things up a bit with big flashy wheels, sharp lower lighting and plenty of chrome, all of which are suspect in production form. It does still have the shape of a robot egg, so we're not totally surprised there. The car is primarily powered by the gasoline engine, with standard hybrid electric startup and acceleration duties. Honda is also touting a "driving support function" which helps drivers achieve higher mileage. Complete details on what we know below the jump.

Top Gear USA Host Tanner Foust Booted From Ferrari F1 Car

No, Tanner Foust is not being considered as a replacement for Kimi Raikkonen at Scuderia Ferrari, but the Top Gear USA host spent some time behind the wheel of a Ferrari Formula One racer. Though by "seat time" we mean that he just sat down in the car, and was then asked politely to get out. Lame. Apparently is was all a shtick for the SPEED Channel show "Supercars Exposed," hosted by Tanner. Although, you know, it sort of makes his Lamborghini Reventón test drive seem really exciting. Visit Autofiends to read more as they lap up Tanner's every single waking moment.

Signs, Signs, Everywhere A Sign

America's 10 Most Confusing Traffic Signs

The creation of safe and legible road signs is an art, but the 10 traffic guideposts below demonstrate not all sign makers are Michelangelo. Whether because of confusing symbols, contradictory instructions or an excess of information, these signs obfuscate more than help the driver. Most of these signs are the creation of local and state governments that seem to lack the time or sophistication to make clear ones. Although these are the 10 most confusing traffic signs we could find, feel free to add photos and descriptions of awful signs you've found in your own travels. More »

The Telegraph Ranks The 100 Ugliest Cars Of All Time

You figure a British publication that set out to do a Top 100 Ugliest Cars Ever list would be heavy on the weird UK machinery, and The Telegraph doesn't disappoint in that department (e.g., the Aston Martin Bulldog, above). But don't think that they've forgotten about Detroit; not only do the Pacer, the Fox Mustang, and the Edsel make the list, but… well, we don't want to spoil it for you, but let's just say that WE'RE NUMBAH ONE! WE'RE NUMBAH ONE! Thanks to Paul for the tip! [Telegraph.co.uk]

KITT: First Drive

As a child of the 80s and former member of the Knight Rider faithful (I happily toted the Rider lunchbox until third grade) it was nearly impossible to stifle my internal yelp of anticipation when first presented with the keys to the new KITT for an exclusive first drive. It's irrational, because I knew the car sitting in front of me wasn't the F-body KITT of my childhood dreams, but when those sweeping lights fired up in front for the first time, it was enough to make me giddy as a school boy. Especially because although it can't talk (at least not without help from the installed Mio GPS unit), this car's the real deal — a fire-breathing, bad guy-chasing weapon of fictional justice. That's because beneath the toys and cosmetic upgrades, this isn't the auto-tranny GT used for the made-for-TV movie, it's a 540 HP Shelby GT500KR.

Top Gear Invades London, Takes Tower Bridge With Tank

Self-promotion is something the boys over at Top Gear have never had a problem with, and as part of the build-up to Top Gear Live, they've pulled out another stunt ready to become an instant classic: Driving a tank across the Tower Bridge following a line of supercars. Why'd they do it? Although initially we thought maybe Clarkson's ego finally convinced him an invasion of London made sense or perhaps Captain Slow finally found something to drive that he felt he could keep up with. No, in reality the Tower Bridge stunt was part of an attempt to promote the live stage show kicking off in the UK this October before it goes global. All we know is, although it was an interesting play, we'll keep our remote-controlled tank, thank you very much.

Sarah Palin Brings Youth, Feathered Hair And Mustang Grande To The McCain Ticket

We were speculating just last week about what appeared to be Barack Obama's '61 Dodge Lancer (as well as his 2000 Grand Cherokee), wondering what the McCain camp could do to counter the old Mopar's awesomeness… when here comes a shot of McCain running mate Sarah Palin posing by a '73 Ford Mustang Grande with the most 80s hair imaginable! If not for the trees and stuff in the background, this photo could easily have been lifted right out of my high school yearbook. Can you hear the strains of Judas Priest and smell the burning seeds and stems? She's 9 years older than the car - and yes, it does make me feel old to realize that a major party's VP candidate is about my age - which means the equivalent McCain photo would feature a sporty '46 Ford Super Deluxe Coupe. Lamborghini Murcielago In Deadly Accident On California's 101, Obliterated Almost Beyond Recognition

Early this morning, a green Lamborghini Murcielago was completely destroyed in a deadly accident on California's 101 freeway in Woodland Hills. The car was spotted just before the incident allegedly undertaking in some very noteworthy speeding suspected to have resulted in the car punching through a guardrail and smashing into a parking structure. The unnamed driver was pronounce dead on the scene when police arrived and after watching the footage from the accident scene, we're not at all surprised. You know a wreck is bad when the only way to identify a car is by the wheels. At this rate, there won't be too many Murcielagos making it to classic status. (Hat tip to Noraa!) [LATimes]

2009 Cadillac CTS-V: First Drive

Only a couple of minutes into the briefing and already things are going bad. “The supercharged engine doesn’t trail off up to the 6,200 RPM redline, so on the track, you may find yourself hitting the rev limiter once or twice,” says a Cadillac spokesperson, preparing us for our first foray onto the track at Monticello. I’m sheepishly trying to sink further into the leather couch, hoping none of the elderly car journalists sitting around me brings up the fact that, half an hour ago, I was bouncing off the rev-limiter at full throttle in third and fourth gear, passing all of them on the wrong side of a two-lane mountain road. I guess that Cadillac considers the 556 HP, 191 MPH 2009 Cadillac CTS-V so fast that drivers — even professional car reviewers — won’t be able to fully exploit its engine on the road. The thing is, they’re wrong.

How To Fix Barack Obama's Moon Shot Of A Ten-Year Energy Independence Plan

In his acceptance speech last night for the nomination of candidate for President (and bringer of hope to all humanity, or something like that) from the Democratic Party, Barack Obama issued a pledge for a ten-year plan to end U.S. dependence on oil from the Middle East. That's right, only ten years for us to kick the habit — a difficult time frame, but a wholly worthwhile pledge. But we've heard this before, right? Sure, and for some, most memorable will be Kennedy's famous desire to drop 'mericans on the moon in a decade. But we mustn't forget that, if elected, Obama won't be the first President to make such a call. Carter did it first, and we all saw how well that worked out. So is this the same crap, different day? Perhaps. It definitely will be if Obama doesn't ditch the silly specifics. More »

Chevy Volt Fully Revealed With Corvette Centennial Concept In Transformers 2 Set Video

Here it is kids: our first look at a 2010 Chevy Volt, complete and in-motion on the set of the still-in-production Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. We got a glimpse at the upper half of the Chevy Volt earlier this evening, but this is the whole enchilada: tail end, blacked-out roof, front end, and even the final Volt badge on the back. There happen to be other cars doing their thing, like the Corvette Centennial Design Concept, and of course the Chevy Camaro and Optimus Prime, but who cares? We finally get to see the skin of revolutionary car we can't get for at least another year and a half for an indeterminate price! Yay! Oh, wait... More »

He will also be remembered as a great writer, known to many for his years of work writing about cars and automotive history for Road & Track. Phil Hill is survived by his wife Alma, one son and two daughters. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends, family and colleagues. More information as it becomes available. Top Gear USA Host Tanner Foust Touring Europe In Lamborghini Reventón

Although it's a yawnsville of a story at the moment, Top Gear USA's Tanner Foust is bombing around Italy right now in a Lamborghini Reventón, on his way to tackling the Nürburgring in a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640. Wake us when he gets there. Hopefully the LP640 stays in one piece, unlike the trend as of late. [AutoFiends]
