While at the Paris Auto Show at the beginning of the month, Spinn and I walked past the Chrysler Group display and as we passed the four-door Wrangler Unlimited, we both made a startling realization — the 4x4 with more off-road lineage than a Hummer could ever have totally has the potential to be a Hummer killer. We even remarked as much to an auto writer with one of the local Detroit dailies later that evening, and we received the same agreement. Now what you have before you is obvs not the standard, it's actually a Rubicon model featuring some editions by the Jeep/Truck engineering-design build shops, a team run by 300C/Charger/Magnum design chief and all-around good sport Ralph Gilles. His team put together a 4-door 4x4 with an interior featuring custom Katzkin leather seating and powered it with a 3.0L CRD diesel with some Tru-Lok-equipped Dana 44 axles supporting the weight. A performance suspension lift gives it the clearance to take on a set of 35-inch BFG (why yes, there're all sorts of acronym-busters for that one) Mud Terrain tires mounted on Custom 18-inch aluminum wheels supplied by Taneisya. The external toys also include a Warn 9.5ti winch mounted on American Expedition Vehicles (Who woulda thunk there'd be an AEV connection here, right?) new front bumper. And yes, it does look like a billion and a half bucks sprayed in that Rolex Silver paint — and you probably will only feel for maybe a split second like you're driving in a G500 look-alike.

If Jack Haley were alive, he'd buy one.
I can see why they'd only do the custom leather on the seats, can't imagine how many hides it would take to do the full interior. Though, on second thought a nice furry tabby headliner would be quite the conversation starter....
Cheers to the CJ. It actually keeps it real.
I'd dig a diesel Wrangler.
By the way, Ray, tough break on the Tigers. I didn't think those NL boys had it in them.
While doing a double-take quick scroll down the page, the Jeep looked like a G-wagen for a split second. I love old Jeeps, and I love old G-wagens- true off-road heritage in both cases.
How cool would it be to get a modern turbo diesel in a Jeep? Decent mileage, loads of tourque, and in a Jeep you'd probably never feel the old diesel rattle anyway! (If they still rattle at all, that is.)
Thnderblt -- thanks. Rough night for the boys, but I still bless 'em.
This thing looks awesome. It definitely has that classic-Jeep-meets-Land Rover-meets-G-Wagen look to it.
Leather in a jeep is a sin against the gods of Bantam Motors and Karl Probst.
I'd by that thing for my lady.
I agree with the G-Wagon comments. That was my first thought also.
Hey there G-wagon.... oh, no wait thats a jeep!
Love the spare tire cover, nice detail.
Hate the fuel filler, its a jeep not a TT or a ripped off TT (eclipse).
Love the DIESEL! but hate the tacky badge styled like an 80's electronic fuel injection or multi port fuel injection badge on a POS ford or GM.
This is what jeep should be producing IMO... something Charles Bronson could drive without risking loss of his hard guy mystique in spanish dubbed reruns. He's good in english... even better in spanish.
I say build it.... tho I put my money on a non-starter.
They need to wait a few more years before building a Wrangler with diesel options. Not before MB gets their 50 state legal diesel to market at the earliest. I can't see their sales forecasts showing it worthwhile until they can sell it in Cali.
Can't wait for a diesel wrangler. So far almost nothing's been good enough (for the price) to pull me from my '00 TJ...but a 200-ish HP, 400-ish lb-ft (at 700rpm), 20-something MPG diesel could do it.
HDC's got it right, there's a few years of diesel compatibility (ultra-low sulfur, etc) stuff to be worked out before it's ready for prime time.
Heard a big problem with diesels in jeeps is that the low-end torque snaps drivetrain parts like crazy.
That thing is freaking awesome.
PS-Peak torque means nothing, you want a flat torque curve, a good gearbox, and a ton of power.
Is it just me or have you guys been "featuring" a lot of Chrysler products for SEMA?
We've got to get Jeep out of German hands...
Looks hot, but how is it on the trail? I would have bought a Gladiator if they built it. Yes, please get Jeep out of German hands!
"Who'd a thunk" the hood is an AEV also (at least it looked exactly the same as the hood on their JK camper in their booth - and about a half dozen other AEV credited hoods at the show).
I'll wait until one of those goes diesel, also wondering if there are any more pics of that beautiful machine!!
